We are seeking an experienced Boiler Service Technician with strong electrical, mechanical, combustion, and controls troubleshooting ability.
This is not simply a parts-changing position. Our technicians are expected to understand how a boiler system operates, systematically diagnose failures, identify the root cause of a problem, and make the repairs necessary to return equipment to safe and reliable operation.
Our service technicians work on commercial and industrial steam and hot-water boiler systems ranging from relatively simple burner and operating-control arrangements to more sophisticated PLC-based boiler control systems.
The work includes burners and combustion equipment, flame-safeguard systems, PLC controls, operating and limit controls, VFDs, motor starters and motor controls, pumps, actuated valves, sensors, transmitters, protocol converters, communication networks, and associated control wiring.
Our technicians encounter control platforms and equipment from manufacturers including Siemens, Autoflame, Fireye, Honeywell, and Cleaver-Brooks Hawk, along with equipment from numerous boiler, burner, controls, pump, and mechanical equipment manufacturers.

This position requires a technician who is comfortable working independently, communicating directly with customers and plant personnel, reading electrical schematics and equipment documentation, using diagnostic instruments, and taking ownership of a service call from initial diagnosis through final documentation.
Regional travel with occasional overnight travel as needed is required. Technicians participate in Spartan's after-hours emergency service call rotation is required.
What You'll Do
Troubleshoot, service, repair, and maintain commercial and industrial steam and hot-water boiler systems
Diagnose burner ignition, flame failure, combustion, fuel-train, and operating-control problems
Perform combustion analysis and burner setup on natural gas and other applicable fuel systems
Troubleshoot flame-safeguard and burner-management systems
Work with Siemens, Autoflame, Fireye, Honeywell, Cleaver-Brooks Hawk, and other boiler and burner control platforms
Troubleshoot PLC-controlled boiler and mechanical systems
Diagnose basic digital and analog control circuits, including discrete I/O, relays, switches, sensors, transmitters, and control signals
Troubleshoot VFDs, electric motors, motor starters, contactors, overloads, and motor-control circuits
Diagnose pumps, pump controls, mechanical seals, couplings, bearings, and related pumping-system problems
Troubleshoot actuated valves, control valves, pressure controls, temperature controls, and level-control systems
Perform basic control wiring, component replacement, termination, and electrical troubleshooting
Use electrical meters, combustion analyzers, pressure instruments, and other diagnostic equipment
Read and interpret electrical schematics, ladder diagrams, P&IDs, piping drawings, equipment manuals, and sequence-of-operation documentation
Troubleshoot communication problems involving protocol converters and basic industrial control networks
Perform boiler startups, commissioning, testing, and operational verification
Perform preventive maintenance and identify developing equipment problems before failure
Assist with boiler inspections, pressure-part repairs, tube replacement, and other mechanical work when required
Coordinate with customers, plant personnel, manufacturers, inspectors, and Spartan field personnel
Clearly explain equipment problems and recommended repairs to customers
Accurately document diagnostic findings, repairs performed, parts used, operating conditions, and recommendations
Maintain company service vehicles, diagnostic equipment, tools, and assigned inventory
Participate in after-hours and emergency service rotation
Travel throughout Spartan's service territory as required
Minimum Requirements
High School Diploma or GED
Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record
Ability to pass required background screening and drug testing
Commercial or industrial boiler, burner, HVAC, combustion, industrial controls, or closely related service experience
Strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting ability
Ability to safely use a digital multimeter and other electrical diagnostic instruments
Working understanding of 120 VAC control circuits
Ability to read and troubleshoot electrical schematics and basic ladder logic
Familiarity with relays, contactors, motor starters, transformers, switches, sensors, and safety circuits
Working knowledge of electric motors, pumps, valves, and mechanical equipment
Ability to systematically diagnose equipment rather than relying solely on component replacement
Ability to use technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer documentation to solve unfamiliar problems
Basic computer competency and ability to work with electronic service documentation and equipment interfaces
Ability to perform physically demanding field work in mechanical rooms, boiler rooms, industrial facilities, and other operating environments
Ability to work independently without continuous supervision
Ability to communicate professionally with customers and plant personnel
Willingness to participate in after-hours emergency service
Willingness to travel overnight when required
Demonstrated history of dependable employment

VFD setup and troubleshooting
Motor controls and MCC equipment
4–20 mA and other analog instrumentation
Pressure, temperature, level, and flow transmitters
Modulating actuators and control valves
Protocol converters and industrial communication systems
Combustion analysis and burner tuning
Boiler startup and commissioning
Steam systems and steam specialties
Hydronic heating systems
Pump troubleshooting and repair
Low-water cutoff and boiler water-level controls
CSD-1 testing and documentation
ASME Section I equipment
NBIC repair work
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
Manufacturer boiler, burner, controls, or combustion training
Prior Military Service in a Technical Specialty is Highly Valued
Navy MM, EM, EN, GSE, GSM, former BT ratings; Navy Seabee UT or CE ratings
Army 91C, 91D, 91B, 12P, or similar specialties.

A strong Boiler Service Technician at Spartan should develop into more than someone who can repair a burner.
We don't expect anyone to walk through the door already knowing every boiler, burner, PLC, VFD, control system, or piece of equipment we service.
