Shop Fabricator / Welder
- Amarillo, TX
- Primarily Shop-Based
- Full-Time
Spartan Boiler & Mechanical is the premier commercial and industrial mechanical contractor specializing in boiler systems, steam plant construction, process piping, pressure vessel fabrication, and critical mechanical equipment throughout the Central United States.
We are seeking an experienced Shop Fabricator / Welder for our Amarillo fabrication facility.
Our fabrication shop is focused primarily on heavier carbon steel construction of pressure vessels, piping, tanks, skids, and industrial mechanical equipment. This is not a sheet-metal fabrication or “tinner” position.
Our craftsmen build ASME “S” and “U” stamped equipment, Code pipe spools, blowdown separators, blowoff tanks, accumulators, and many more. We also fabricate atmospheric feedwater tanks, water softener skids, reverse osmosis skids, pre-fabricated piping assemblies, equipment supports, trailer repairs and customizations, and one-off custom industrial projects.
The work changes regularly. One project may involve fitting and welding a Code piping assembly from drawings; the next may involve laying out and fabricating a tank, building a structural skid for water treatment equipment, modifying a trailer, or solving a fabrication problem for a customer.
We are looking for someone who can do more than run a weld bead. A strong candidate understands layout, fit-up, fabrication sequence, welding, distortion, dimensions, and how individual components become a finished assembly.
We value true craftsmanship: work that is properly fitted, plumb, level, square, professionally supported, and finished with the attention to detail expected of a skilled tradesman.
What You'll Do
Fabricate commercial and industrial piping, tanks, pressure vessels, skids, supports, and mechanical equipment
Perform fabrication primarily involving carbon steel plate, structural steel, pipe, fittings, flanges, and pressure-retaining components
Fit and weld ASME Code pipe spools and pressure-retaining assemblies

Fabricate blowdown separators, blowoff tanks, atmospheric feedwater tanks, and related boiler-room equipment
Build water softener and reverse osmosis equipment skids
Fabricate piping manifolds and prefabricated piping assemblies
Lay out and fit pipe, fittings, flanges, nozzles, structural members, plate, and equipment components
Perform SMAW welding, including work using E6010 and E7018 electrodes
Perform other welding processes as required by the project and applicable welding procedures
Read and work from fabrication drawings, piping drawings, P&IDs, sketches, specifications, and occasionally something drawn on a piece of cardboard or a napkin
Accurately measure, lay out, cut, bevel, fit, tack, weld, and finish fabricated components
Use levels, squares, straightedges, center finders, wraparounds, layout tools, and precision measuring equipment
Operate saws, ironworkers, drills, grinders, positioners, welding equipment, and other fabrication machinery
Perform structural fabrication associated with equipment skids, platforms, supports, and mechanical assemblies
Perform trailer repairs, modifications, and customizations, including structural and equipment-related fabrication
Assist with the construction and modification of mobile boiler and mechanical equipment packages
Perform custom fabrication for unusual industrial applications and customer-specific projects
Maintain dimensional accuracy throughout fabrication and welding
Control weld sequence and distortion to produce properly aligned finished assemblies
Maintain material identification and traceability when required for Code fabrication
Follow applicable Welding Procedure Specifications, drawings, traveler documentation, and Spartan's Quality Control requirements
Work with Authorized Inspectors and Spartan QC personnel when required for Code fabrication
Inspect your own work and correct deficiencies before considering a project complete
Maintain welding machines, fabrication equipment, tools, and work areas
Assist with occasional field installation or repair work when required

Ability to perform physically demanding shop and occasional field work
Ability to work independently from drawings and instructions
Ability to work effectively as part of a fabrication team
Willingness to learn Spartan's ASME Quality Control requirements and Code fabrication procedures
Demonstrated history of dependable employment
Pride in producing work that looks as good as it performs

Build Your Craft. Build Your Future.
At Spartan, fabrication is more than laying down a good weld.
We want craftsmen who understand how to take a drawing, a pile of material, and a set of dimensions and turn them into a finished piece of industrial equipment.
That means learning layout, fit-up, fabrication sequence, dimensional control, material identification, welding procedures, pressure-retaining construction, inspection requirements, and the standards that separate ordinary fabrication from Code-quality work.
We don't expect every fabricator who walks through the door to already understand every aspect of ASME construction. If you have mastered the fundamentals of welding and fabrication, we can teach you Code work.
Spartan provides opportunities for continued development in:
Advanced pipe welding
Pipe and pressure-vessel fabrication
ASME Section I construction
ASME Section VIII pressure-vessel construction
ASME Section IX welding requirements
NBIC repair and alteration work
Welding Procedure Specifications
Material identification and traceability
Pressure-retaining welds
Fabrication layout and dimensional control
Inspection and testing requirements
Boiler pressure-part fabrication
Industrial piping systems
Equipment skid design and fabrication
Custom industrial fabrication
A skilled fabricator can grow into Code welding, advanced pressure-vessel fabrication, field Code repairs, pipefitting, shop leadership, or other specialized work within Spartan.
All employment inquiries and applications are handled confidentially.
$20.00 - $40.00/hr - Based on experience and demonstrated capability.
