Shop Laborer

    Amarillo, TX
    Primarily Shop Based
    Full-Time

Spartan Boiler & Mechanical is the premier commercial and industrial mechanical contractor specializing in boiler systems, steam plant construction, process piping, water treatment equipment, pressure vessel fabrication, and critical mechanical systems throughout the Central United States.

We are seeking a dependable Shop Laborer to support our fabrication shop, service department, and field operations.

This is a hands-on, entry-level position for someone who isn't afraid of physical work and wants an opportunity to learn the industrial mechanical trades.

The work isn't glamorous every day. Shop Laborers help receive and move material, clean and prepare equipment, organize work areas, load and unload trucks, operate basic tools, assist craftsmen, and take care of the hundreds of small jobs required to keep a mechanical contractor operating.

But you'll also work around welders, pipefitters, boiler technicians, fabricators, water treatment technicians, ASME Code work, industrial equipment, and active fabrication projects every day.

Previous boiler, welding, or mechanical experience is not required.

We will teach someone who wants to learn. We need you to show up, work safely, take direction, stay productive, and take pride in doing even the simple jobs correctly.

What You'll Do
  • Assist welders, fabricators, pipefitters, service technicians, and other Spartan craftsmen

  • Load, unload, move, and organize pipe, steel, equipment, tools, and materials

  • Receive and put away incoming materials and supplies

  • Remove mill scale, rust, paint, slag, gasket material, and other contaminants as required

  • Use grinders, wire wheels, drills, saws, and other common hand and power tools

  • Assist with cutting, grinding, beveling, and material preparation under supervision

  • Clean and prepare boilers, tanks, pressure vessels, pumps, and mechanical equipment for repair or fabrication

  • Assist with equipment disassembly and reassembly

  • Assist with boiler tube removal, cleaning, and other boiler repair activities when required

  • Help prepare equipment and materials for upcoming jobs

  • Make occasional parts or material pickups and deliveries

  • Assist field crews at customer facilities when required

  • Follow Spartan safety requirements and instructions from supervisors and craftsmen

You don't have to know boilers to start a career at Spartan.

You don't have to arrive as a certified welder, experienced pipefitter, or trained service technician either.

But you do have to be willing to work.

A Shop Laborer works alongside experienced craftsmen and gets firsthand exposure to the industrial mechanical trades. If you pay attention, ask good questions, learn how to use the tools correctly, and prove that you can be depended on, there is a tremendous amount you can learn here.

At Spartan, that can include:

  • Industrial safety and proper tool use

  • Reading a tape measure and basic layout

  • Material identification

  • Pipe, fittings, valves, and flanges

  • Grinding, cutting, and material preparation

  • Welding and fabrication fundamentals

  • Industrial pipefitting

  • Rigging and material handling

  • Boiler construction and repair

  • Pumps and mechanical equipment

  • Water treatment equipment

  • ASME and NBIC Code work

  • Commercial and industrial mechanical systems

Employees who demonstrate the aptitude, work ethic, and desire to advance may have opportunities to move into any of our many other trades and service departments.

We can teach you a trade. We can't teach you to show up, work hard, or care about the quality of your work.
