Water Treatment Equipment Technician

    Amarillo, TX
    Regional Travel
    Full-Time

Spartan Boiler & Mechanical is the premier commercial and industrial mechanical contractor specializing in boiler systems, steam plant construction, process piping, water treatment equipment, and critical mechanical systems throughout the Central United States.

We are seeking a Water Treatment Equipment Technician to install, service, troubleshoot, and maintain commercial and industrial water treatment equipment.

This position works extensively with commercial and industrial water softeners, reverse osmosis systems, sediment filters, activated carbon filters, greensand filters, multimedia filtration systems, chemical feed equipment, pumps, valves, controls, and related piping and mechanical equipment.

Much of this equipment supports commercial and industrial boiler plants, where properly treated makeup and feedwater are critical to boiler reliability, efficiency, and service life.

Our technicians work on equipment ranging from relatively straightforward softeners and filtration systems to larger multi-tank treatment systems incorporating automatic control valves, chemical feed equipment, reverse osmosis systems, pumps, instrumentation, and electronic controls.

The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, comfortable troubleshooting electrical and mechanical equipment, capable of performing clean and professional piping installations, and interested in understanding the water chemistry behind the equipment being serviced.

Previous water treatment experience is preferred, but it is not required for a candidate with a strong mechanical, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, industrial maintenance, or equipment-service background.

We can teach water treatment. We need someone who already knows how to work with their hands, solve problems, and that takes pride in the quality of their work.

What You'll Do
  • Install, service, troubleshoot, and maintain commercial and industrial water treatment equipment

  • Service single, duplex, twin-alternating, and multi-tank water softener systems

  • Troubleshoot softener control valves, meters, injectors, brine valves, brine tanks, actuators, and electronic controllers

  • Replace and install ion-exchange resin, gravel support beds, activated carbon, greensand, multimedia, and other treatment media

  • Install, service, and troubleshoot reverse osmosis systems, including membranes, membrane housings, prefiltration, pumps, pressure controls, flow controls, instrumentation, and associated equipment

  • Install and service sediment, cartridge, activated carbon, greensand, and multimedia filtration systems

  • Diagnose treatment problems involving hardness leakage, iron, manganese, sediment, chlorine, pressure drop, flow restriction, insufficient regeneration, excessive salt consumption, and poor equipment performance

  • Install and service chemical feed pumps, solution tanks, controllers, injection assemblies, and associated tubing and piping

  • Perform field water testing to evaluate raw water, treated water, and equipment performance

  • Troubleshoot pumps, motors, VFDs, solenoid valves, actuated valves, switches, sensors, and basic electrical control circuits

  • Perform basic electrical and controls troubleshooting using a digital multimeter

  • Program and configure automatic water treatment controllers and equipment

  • Read piping diagrams, electrical schematics, equipment manuals, and manufacturer documentation

  • Install and modify PVC, CPVC, copper, stainless steel, threaded steel, and other applicable piping systems

  • Perform equipment startup, commissioning, regeneration, flushing, sanitization, and operational verification

  • Produce installations that are clean, plumb, level, square, properly supported, and professionally finished

  • Perform preventive maintenance and identify developing equipment problems before failure

  • Assist with boiler feedwater and related boiler-room mechanical equipment when required

  • Communicate directly and professionally with customers and facility personnel

  • Document water-test results, equipment condition, repairs performed, parts and media used, and recommended corrective action

  • Maintain company vehicles, tools, test equipment, and assigned inventory

  • Travel throughout Spartan's service territory as required

Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record

  • Ability to pass required background screening and drug testing

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience with plumbing, mechanical equipment, industrial maintenance, HVAC, water treatment, or equipment service

  • Ability to safely and effectively use common hand and power tools

  • Basic understanding of piping, valves, pumps, and mechanical equipment

  • Ability to use a digital multimeter for basic electrical troubleshooting

  • Ability to read a tape measure and perform basic layout and installation work

  • Ability to read equipment manuals, piping diagrams, and basic electrical schematics

  • Ability and willingness to learn basic water chemistry and understand how water quality affects treatment and mechanical equipment

  • Ability to systematically troubleshoot equipment rather than simply replace components

  • Basic computer competency and ability to complete electronic service documentation

  • Ability to perform physically demanding field work, including lifting equipment, treatment media, salt, tools, and materials

  • Ability to work independently after appropriate training

  • Ability to communicate professionally with customers and facility personnel

  • Willingness to travel overnight when required

  • Demonstrated history of dependable employment

Preferred Qualifications

Special consideration will be given to candidates with experience involving:

  • Commercial or industrial water treatment equipment

  • Water softeners and ion-exchange systems

  • Water softener control valves and electronic controllers

  • Reverse osmosis systems

  • RO membranes, pressure vessels, pumps, and controls

  • Sediment and cartridge filtration

  • Activated carbon filtration

Benefits include:
  • 100% employer-paid employee health insurance

  • Dental and vision coverage

  • Health Savings Account

  • Life insurance

  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match

  • Accrued Paid Time Off

  • Paid holidays

  • Company-provided specialty tools and test equipment

  • Company service vehicle for applicable field-service positions

  • Paid technical and manufacturer training

  • Opportunities to develop advanced water treatment, boiler, controls, and mechanical service skills

Grow Beyond Water Treatment Equipment

A good water treatment technician shouldn't just know how to make a softener regenerate. We want our technicians to understand why the equipment is there, what it is removing from the water, how it accomplishes that treatment, and what happens to the customer's equipment when treatment isn't working properly.

We don't expect a candidate to arrive knowing every control valve, RO system, filtration system, chemical pump, controller, or piece of treatment equipment we encounter.

We do expect someone with the mechanical fundamentals and curiosity necessary to figure things out.

If you can understand how equipment works, read the manual, use your meter, follow the piping, and systematically troubleshoot a problem, we can teach you the water treatment side.

Spartan provides opportunities for continued development in:

  • Water Chemistry and Field Water Testing

  • Water Softening and Ion Exchange

  • Regeneration Systems and Controls

  • Reverse Osmosis Systems

  • Membrane Technology and RO Troubleshooting

  • Sediment, Carbon, Greensand, and Multi-media Filtration

  • Chemical Feed Systems

  • Pumps, Motors, and VFDs

  • Electrical and Controls Troubleshooting

  • Boiler Feedwater Systems

  • Boiler Operation and Waterside Fundamentals

  • Steam and Hydronic Systems

  • Equipment Startup and Commissioning

  • Manufacturer-Specific Equipment Training

For technicians who want to continue advancing, this position also provides a path into the broader boiler, controls, and mechanical service work performed by Spartan.

We expect our technicians to continue expanding their capabilities throughout their careers.

All employment inquiries and applications are handled confidentially.
